Which generator can i use for a weka saw or core drill?

WEKA core drills and saws often operate under extreme conditions on construction sites. This makes it all the more important to understand the on-site conditions and to be fully aware of the requirements for using a generator with a WEKA machine.

An incorrect configuration can lead to motor damage, destroyed electronics, or safety risks.

Here you will find general guidelines for operating WEKA machines with a generator or transformer.

Below, you will find specific values and requirements for generators used with individual WEKA machines.

General guidelines for generators for diamond core drills

1. Pay attention to the voltage

Diamond core drilling rigs with electric motors require an extremely high amount of energy for a short time when turned on. The starting current required here is often several times the specified rated power. If the generator is too weak, the voltage drops and the machine will not start. This can result in fire damage.

2. Ensure voltage regulation

Electronically controlled core drilling machines, such as those from WEKA, require a precise voltage, which can only be guaranteed by voltage regulation. Features such as soft start and LED overload indicators are absolutely dependent on regulated voltage.

An AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator) in the generator keeps the output voltage constant, even during sudden load changes.

Generators with inverter technology are even better. They deliver a “pure sine wave” and thus the most reliable power supply.

Capacitor generators without AVR, on the other hand, are not suitable for use with a core drill due to significant voltage fluctuations.

3. Make sure to choose the right continuous power rating

The generator you use to power a diamond core drill should have a continuous power rating significantly higher than the drill’s rated power. For example, for a WEKA BL20 with a rated power of 2200 W, you need a generator that delivers at least 3200 W in continuous operation.

The specified maximum power of a generator is explicitly not the appropriate value to use as a guide.

4. Be aware of safety risks

The greatest safety risk on construction sites is usually water. Although WEKA core drilling machines are equipped with a PRCD-S circuit breaker, this only functions reliably with generators if the generator is grounded via a grounding stake in the ground. The generator itself should have at least an IP54 protection rating (dust- and splash-proof).

Furthermore, never operate other devices on the generator at the same time. Turning other devices on and off can cause undervoltage and/or overvoltage spikes that may damage the equipment.

Requirements for generators used with weka machines

Detailed instructions for using generators with WEKA machines can also be found in the operating manual. Follow these instructions carefully. Improper use can damage the electrical system.

BL20/BL21, DK11-32

These devices can be operated using a generator or a customer-supplied transformer if the following conditions are met:

  • Operating voltage within +5% and –10% of the rated voltage
  • Inverter generator
  • Frequency 50–60 Hz
  • AC voltage, output power at least 3.2 kW

DK42(E)/52(E)

These units can be operated with a generator or a site-supplied transformer if the following conditions are met:

  • Operating voltage within +5% and –10% of the rated voltage
  • Integrated automatic voltage regulator with start-up boost
  • Frequency 50–60 Hz; max. 65 Hz
  • 3-phase AC voltage, output power at least
    DK42(E) – 400V – 5.5 kVA
    DK52(E) – 400V – 7.5 kVA

SR25-75:

These units can be operated from a generator or a customer-supplied transformer if the following conditions are met:

  • Operating voltage within +5% and –10% of the rated voltage
  • Integrated automatic voltage regulator with start-up boost
  • Frequency 50–60 Hz; max. 65 Hz
  • AC voltage, output power at least
    SR25/38 – 4.5 kVA
    SR65/68/75 – 13 kVA

HD16 und FU6D/C

These units can be operated with a generator or transformer if the following conditions are met:

  • Operating voltage within +5% and –10% of the rated voltage
  • Integrated automatic voltage regulator with start-up boost
  • Frequency 50–60 Hz; max. 65 Hz
  • AC voltage, output power at least
    230 V ~ – 4.5 kVA
    400 V 3-phase – 4.5 kVA

HS45, HS50, TS40, TR40, TK40, FU6 D/C

These devices can be operated from a generator or transformer if the following conditions are met:

  • Operating voltage within +5% and –10% of the rated voltage
  • Integrated automatic voltage regulator with start-up boost
  • Frequency 50–60 Hz; max. 65 Hz
  • AC voltage, output power at least
    230V ~ – 4,5 kVA
    400V 3~ – 11 kVA

WS76 H und FU15D

These units can be operated with a generator or a customer-supplied transformer if the following conditions are met:

  • Operating voltage 3~ 400V ± 10%
  • Integrated automatic voltage regulator with start-up boost
  • Frequency 50–60 Hz
  • Output power at least 20 kVA
