What is a core drill?
A core drill is a power tool used to drill cylindrical—that is, circular—holes in hard materials such as concrete, masonry, or natural stone. Unlike hammer drills or twist drills, a core drill uses a diamond-tipped drill bit that cleanly cuts through the material. This results in precise holes with only minimal damage to the surrounding area. Because of the diamond-tipped drill bit, the machine is also correctly and fully referred to as a diamond core drill.
Core drills are usually equipped with water cooling or suction cooling.
What is the difference between a drill and a core drill?
While a conventional drill typically penetrates the workpiece to a certain depth using a solid-shank drill bit and cuts through the material in the process, a core drill cuts a circle into the material and removes a solid cylinder from the workpiece—known as the drill core. It is specifically designed for drilling in hard building materials and offers high precision and long-term durability, particularly for large diameters or demanding applications.
What are WEKA core drills used for?
WEKA diamond core drills are used in the construction and finishing trades, in industry, and in the skilled trades. The goal is to drill clean and precisely circular holes in hard materials. These include, for example, concrete and reinforced concrete, asphalt, stone, and masonry. Typical applications include creating openings for conduits—such as for ventilation, cable harnesses, or pipes—core drilling in concrete or asphalt, and drilling mounting holes during the installation of heavy structural components.

How do you mount a core drill?
Hand-held machines are guided directly by the user. For precise and safe drilling with rig-operated machines, drill stands are used, which are secured either mechanically using dowels, quick-release columns, or anchors, or by vacuum. Drill stands can generally be mounted on walls, floors, and ceilings, provided they offer sufficient stability. The choice of the optimal mounting method depends on the substrate and the drilling situation.
What does wet or dry drilling mean?
In wet drilling, water is used for cooling to reduce heat buildup and bind dust. This method is ideal for concrete, reinforced concrete (reinforced concrete), granite, natural stone, and tiles. A continuous flow of water over the drill bit cools it. At the same time, the water binds the drill cuttings or dust into slurry, thereby extending the drill bit’s service life.
Dry drilling is performed without water. This is particularly useful for masonry or softer materials such as sand-lime brick, screed, or clay bricks. Respiratory protection is required for dry drilling, as well as a connected vacuum cleaner to extract the drill dust. Dry drilling of concrete (including reinforced concrete) requires the use of machines with soft-hammer technology (for example: DKS15 or DKS32). What materials can I drill with a WEKA machine?
WEKA machines are suitable for a wide variety of applications. Depending on the machine and model, they are suitable for core drilling through masonry, concrete, reinforced concrete, natural stone, or asphalt. What power do I need for each application?
For smaller holes in masonry, compact machines with lower power—between 1,000 and 2,000 watts—are sufficient. For concrete or reinforced concrete, more powerful tools with high torque and, if necessary, a water connection are required. For large diameters, voltages of 400 V are also often required. What is the difference between handheld and rig-operated machines?
Hand-guided machines are operated manually and are suitable for smaller diameters or flexible applications. Even when space is limited, access is difficult, or there is little room available, hand-guided core drilling machines offer advantages. With sufficient power, they can even handle drilling through reinforced concrete.
Rig-operated machines are secured to a drilling stand and allow for particularly precise and labor-intensive drilling, such as when working with large diameters, hard materials, or particularly deep holes. Rig-operated core drilling machines are also often a good choice for overhead drilling. Stand-guided core drilling machines not only provide secure guidance but also protect against kickback. Which concrete saw is right for my application?
Which concrete saw is right for a particular application depends on the material being cut. The cutting depth is also a factor, as is whether the sawing will be done using a portable saw or one mounted on a fixed rail.

What is the difference between a cut-off saw, a ring saw, and a chainsaw?
Cutting saws use a rotating blade and are typically used for straight cuts in concrete.
Ring saws can achieve significantly greater cutting depths because they do not have a central spindle to which a rotating saw blade would need to be attached. Instead, a saw ring is mounted and secured near the handle.
Chainsaws with diamond-tipped chains are particularly well-suited for tight spaces, small radii, and clean corners. The right saw for your project depends on the material, the environment, and the desired cut.

The maximum cutting depth depends on the specific saw model. Ring saws enable particularly deep cuts while maintaining a compact design. How does the water supply system work on concrete saws?
All WEKA saws feature a built-in water connection. The water is directed directly onto the saw blade or saw chain. This constantly reduces the frictional heat generated by the saw blade or chain, and the dust released is immediately bound by the water, keeping the air clean. The targeted cooling provided by the water during the cut also reduces wear.
Depending on the model, you can connect the water supply to external systems or feed it directly from a water tank. In some cases, the water flow can be regulated via a valve. Please refer to the information in the respective operating instructions.
How do you properly maintain a WEKA saw?
WEKA saws are designed for a long service life and high durability. Nevertheless, you should have the following items checked regularly:
